Near zero “food miles” is the proud boast of Gillian & Adrian Harrison for their Wensleydale Ice Cream – with the principal ingredient being milk using whole Jersey Milk and Cream from their Hillside Herd at Manor Farm, Thornton Rust. The journey from the milking parlour to the modern art ice cream production room is about 30 yards. “But to be honest we will need to bring our ice cream the 10 miles to Leyburn” says Adrian with a smile.
Thornton Rust is in the very heart of rural Wensleydale and Wensleydale ice cream is only available in North Yorkshire, so be sure to try some when you visit The Dales Festival of Food and Drink in Leyburn.
Gillian adds “based on other events where we have been selling ice-cream my main concern at this great event will be having enough ice cream available to meet demand, even though we take more each time we go out. We will be offering our wide range of flavours, including recent additions of Orange, Cream and ‘Rich Choc Chip’”.
Adrian has been showing his Jersey cattle from his pedigree herd, and the awards won are too many to mention here – please see www.wensleydale-icecream.co.uk -, but include Breed Champion Great Yorkshire Show in 2009 – a major achievement plus numerous other Championships at the GYS and other shows in the north of England.
Leyburn has a host of food and gift shops, hotels, public houses and restaurants. Visit them and buy something special, have lunch, a snack or a cup of tea. Even better stay for the evening and enjoy the entertainment and hospitality.
The Dales have a tremendous reputation for making music so why not spend some time listening to 4 award winning Bands playing jazz, traditional band music, swing and popular tunes. We're pleased to have; Leyburn Band, Moobeams, Muker Silver Band and Elizabeth joing us over the weekend.
